The ongoing transition towards circular economy, where the value of products, materials and resources is maintained for as long as possible with minimal environmental impacts is crucial to develop a sustainable, low carbon and resource efficient future. Such transition requires development of new environmental and energy solutions, and their innovative implementation and smart operation in our societies.
The Bio and Circular Economy research group at the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences focuses on environmental technology, bioenergy and biorefining, along with industrial biotechnology, with the ultimate goal of promoting a cleaner and safer future for the benefit of people and the environment. The group covers research from the molecular biology level up to waste and wastewater treatment, biorefinery and power plants as well as their integration into urban and industrial systems. The group is part of University’s multidisciplinary Urban Platform for Circular Economy (UPCE) that combines technological solutions, societal dynamics and new business models. The group has active collaboration with urban actors, industry and several national and international research organizations.
We are seeking highly motivated and accomplished applicants in the broad area of environmental and energy engineering for conducting high-level scientific and technological research to promote innovations and activity in circular economy, also in urban environments. Your research may focus, for example, on developing new and sustainable processes and concepts for circular economy or on modelling, automation and digitalization of the respective processes and concepts. Whilst you may have background in academics or practical applications, you are expected to develop your own scientific research profile. Your research should be complementary to the current research in the Bio and Circular Economy research group and it may promote multidisciplinary collaboration with our current research groups for example in automation, materials science and computational physics.
If successful, you will be placed at the level of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor, based on your experience and expertise. While in the early stages of your career (especially in Assistant Professor position) the focus is on research, in time you will be expected to contribute increasingly to teaching, curriculum development and graduate and post-graduate student supervision.
You should have a doctoral degree in environmental or energy engineering, civil engineering, automation engineering or a related field. You should also have experience in scientific or technological research work in academia or in practice.

Initial appointment as Assistant Professor / Associate Professor is for five years and, subject to successful performance, you will become a tenured member of faculty staff at the end of the first five-year period. You will be supported throughout the five-year period to ease transition to faculty positions. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.
Salaries are based on the job demands and employees’ personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. A typical starting salary for an Assistant Professor is approximately 4000 - 4200 EUR/month and for an Associate Professor approximately 4600 - 4900 EUR/month. Higher salaries may be agreed dependent upon experience and/or performance.
