Örebro University and the School of Science and Technology are looking for a doctoral student for the doctoral programme in Chemistry (alternatively Chemistry with specialization in environmental science), concluding with a licentiate degree.
The doctoral study is positioned at the interdisciplinary Man-Technology-Environment Research Centre (MTM) at Örebro University (http://www.oru.se/mtm), which conducts state of the art applied research to advance knowledge on the fate and risks of potentially harmful chemicals to humans and the environment. The MTM Research Centre has an excellent infrastructure for biological and chemical research, including high end mass spectrometers such as high-resolution LC- and GC-qToF, GC-orbitrap, and several low-resolution LC-MS/MS and GC-MS systems. We also have specialized instruments such as supercritical fluid chromatograph, combustion-ion chromatograph (CIC) to measure organic halogens, and LC- and GC-fractionators.
The doctoral candidate will participate in a project starting autumn 2021. The PhD candidate will participate in a project funded by Formas with a focus on developing analytical methods for chlorinated paraffins (CPs) as well as similar emerging organic contaminants (flame retardants, plasticizers, PPCPs, etc), and characterizing their distribution and fate in indoor environments. The research will be conducted by using high-resolution mass spectrometric methods, and a web-based application to quantify CPs will be developed using the R package Shiny.
Specific tasks include i) developing and refining analytical methods to measure CPs in indoor matrices; ii) plan and conduct field sampling in various indoor environments; iii) data analysis and assessment of sources and human indoor exposure of CPs; and iv) assisting in the development of an interactive software using the Shiny package within the R programming language.
The successful candidate should demonstrate knowledge in organic analytical chemistry and have experience with mass spectrometric analysis. Experience with sample preparation and extraction techniques are valuable merits. Knowledge of programming languages such as R or Python for data processing and analysis is also a good merit.
The doctoral programme consists of courses and an independent research project that you will present in a licentiate thesis. The programme concludes with a licentiate degree and comprises 120 credits, which corresponds to two years of full-time study. There is a possibility to continue to a doctoral degree (in total 240 credits) providing that additional funding is available.

As a doctoral student at Örebro University, you will be offered a specially tailored seminar series, covering matters ranging from doctoral programme rules and careers to support during the study period and networking.
The place on the programme is linked to a full-time doctoral studentship for the duration of the study programme. The initial salary for a doctoral studentship is SEK 28100 a month.
The doctoral studentship is a tailored form of employment for students enrolled on a doctoral programme. It guarantees employment for the duration of the doctoral programme (given that the studies progress).
For admission to doctoral studies, applicants are required to meet both general entry requirements and specific entry requirements. In addition, applicants must be considered in other respects to have the ability required to benefit from the programme. For a full account of the entry requirements, refer to the admissions regulations as well as to Annex 2 to the general syllabus for Chemistry.
Applicants meet the specific entry requirements for doctoral studies in Chemistry if he or she has received a passing grade in courses of at least 120 credits, including an independent project at the advanced course level or on the second cycle, in chemistry alternatively in a related subject area. The provision that a related subject area may provide access to the programme only applies on admission to the programme specialisations in life science or environmental science. A person who has acquired substantially corresponding knowledge, in Sweden or abroad, also meets the specific entry requirements.
