The School of Medical Sciences is seeking a postdoctoral researcher in Biomedicine/Medicine for a fixed-term appointment.
This position is part of the research group in Vascular biology, closely associated with Cardiovascular Research Center, CVRC. CVRC is a research environment focusing on cardiovascular diseases, such as arrhythmias, myocardial infarction and heart failure. The main aims of the research environment are to significantly strengthen the cardiovascular research through genuine translational research and collaboration between basic and clinical scientists at Örebro University and Örebro University Hospital, and to create unique multidisciplinary projects in the field of cardiovascular research. The research in the field of cardiovascular diseases are currently strong and expansive. Furthermore the research environment fits well with Örebro University’s strategic initiatives in the area of Successful Ageing as well as Food and Health.
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of death world-wide, accounting for approximately one third of all deaths globally. Atherosclerosis is the underlying process for most CVDs and is characterized by accumulation of cholesterol and activated immune cells in the arterial wall. The clinical presentations of atherosclerosis are diverse and comprise myocardial infarction, stroke, peripheral arterial disease etc. It is well known that men are more frequently affected by myocardial infarction, while women are more affected by peripheral arterial disease. However, it is still largely unknown why different subjects develop atherosclerotic lesions at different sites in the arterial tree.
The appointment as a postdoctoral researcher is intended to enable persons who have recently been awarded their doctoral degree, to consolidate and develop primarily their research/artistic skills.
The overall aim of the project is to evaluate the contribution of lipids and inflammation to the development of atherosclerotic diseases, and to evaluate their importance for disease progression. The post-doc fellow will investigate plasma lipid profiles and inflammatory patterns in patients, and study cellular mechanisms in vitro in cell- and tissue models. The post-doc fellow is expected to work independently, to take the responsibilities of the execution, organization, and development of the research project, to generate and document experimental results, and to report project progresses to the team leader regularly. The post-doc fellow should be experienced in scientific communication, and are expected to supervise junior members of the group.
Eligible for the appointment as postdoctoral researcher are applicants holding a doctoral degree in Biomedicine/medicine or in related subject areas. The doctoral degree should have been awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline. Candidates who have obtained their doctoral degree prior to that may however also be considered if special grounds exist (leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, clinical duties, an elected position in a trade union, or other similar circumstances).
General assessment criteria include good interpersonal skills and an ability to cooperate as well as the ability and suitability otherwise required to perform the duties well. Particular importance shall be attached to the qualities enabling the candidate to contribute to the future development of both research and education. A demonstrated ability and desire to pursue an academic career is also of importance.
We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with a recent Ph.D. in Biomedicine/medicine or other relevant fields. The candidate must have a strong background in cardiovascular research and excellent skills in various molecular biology techniques and cell culture. Complete fluency in both written and spoken English is a requirement. The candidate’s communication and personal skills will be highly valued.
The position is a position for a fixed term of two years. The salary depends on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience.
