This position as Professor of Computer Science with focus on Applied Intelligence with specialisation in Intelligent Manufacturing is related to our research and teaching in the areas of the next generation of intelligent production systems (Beyond Industry 4.0). It is of interest for you who work with AI and want to apply your knowledge in the exciting area of production. We are a team of leading researchers in AI and production who work with the application areas of robotics, health technology and manufacturing systems. We work closely with our external partners to create unique architectures and solutions in the forefront based on the latest developments in the AI area. We have leading competences today in for example expert systems, vision systems, and machine learning. Today at IDT we have around 130 senior researchers and 100 doctoral students.
Your role is to take responsibility for the application area of AI in production. This includes research on big data, advanced analysis, predictive analysis, production informatics and decision science in an industrial production context.
The position embraces research, research supervision, continued development of the research area, and teaching at first-, second and third-cycle levels. The position also includes participating in outreaching activities through publications in highly ranked journals but also through interaction with professionals. As a professor you will contribute to the development of the new research group. This includes taking on leadership and jointly developing the research group, and the ability to initiate and to manage problem-oriented and interdisciplinary research projects. Further, you are expected to contribute to the development of strategic ongoing and future initiatives, both at the University and to our strategic collaboration platforms.
MDH offers excellent work conditions and research possibilities in a well-recognised and -established research environment in the Mälaren region. This professorship is part of a unique and large initiative of the University, where the municipality and the companies in the region ensure that the Mälaren region will continue to be a leading production hub in Europe. The professorship will be fully funded, including funding for building up the research with both postdocs and doctoral students.
We also offer close collaboration with our partner companies and within the research group, and with a high degree of freedom to develop and advance the research activities in the area of the next generation of production research. We perform leading research in embedded systems and production development. For example MDH is a partner of the initiative for Excellence in Production Research (XPRES), a collaboration project between Mälardalen University, the Royal Institute of Technology, Rise (Research Institutes of Sweden) and SWERIM. XPRES is one of two state-funded Swedish strategic initiatives for excellent research in Production Engineering.
We are an important partner to our regional manufacturing companies and our research should be of industrial relevance as well as a high academic standard, with a track record of publications in highly ranked journals. Our goal is to achieve academic excellence in research and education at the Bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral levels by contributing to theory and practice.
Academic skills will have been demonstrated by independent research work which to a significant degree exceeds the requirements for docent competence (see the University’s Guidelines for assessment of docent competence).
Importance is also attached to the planning and leading of research. Academic skills may also have been demonstrated by the ability to achieve results in research through cooperation in joint projects of benefit to academia and to industry/the public sector/society in general and through the ability to disseminate research.
Teaching skills will have been demonstrated by teaching at first-cycle as well as third-cycle levels. The assessment of teaching skills shall apply to the planning, carrying out and evaluation of teaching as well as supervision and examination. Teaching skills shall be documented in such a way that their quality can also be assessed.
The applicant should have completed ten weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge. A person appointed as a Professor but lacking training in higher education teaching and learning will be offered in-house training during the first year. The course in higher education teaching and learning at Mälardalen University corresponds to ten weeks of training.
Good communicative abilities in English are a requirement since international contacts and cooperation are of great interest, and since most of our advanced courses are given in English.

The assessment criteria shall be based on the degree of skills required for the appointment. In general terms these assessment criteria shall include the ability to cooperate as well as the ability and suitability otherwise required to fulfil the duties well.
The same attention shall be paid to the assessment of teaching skills as to the assessment of academic skills.
The applicant shall be able to provide references which demonstrate the ability to make contacts easily and create dialogues with companies and organisations and also references that support the applicant’s ability to inspire cooperation and network building.
The post includes supervision of doctoral students, and therefore training and experience as a principal supervisor in research studies is necessary.
Decisive importance is attached to personal suitability. We value the qualities that an even distribution of age and gender, as well as ethnic and cultural diversity, can contribute to the organisation.
Documented experience of applying for and obtaining research funding will be considered a merit. The work as a professor also implies administrative work, so experience of administrative work and management roles is desirable. Work outside academia in the development of production systems and also in interfunctional cooperation is also considered a merit.
For this post, documented scientific skills and experience within the field of Industrial Production and Manufacturing are a merit. Furthermore, documented experience from teaching at an academic level and from cooperation with companies are beneficial. The candidate should have an interest in close cooperation with the private sector, which is a requirement since MDH has shown that co-production is a highly successful way of conducting research.
Good communicative abilities in Swedish is to advantage since this facilitates participation in the earlier years of first-cycle studies and cooperation with the companies. Since the post aims to strengthen the development of the research team in Product and Production Development and also the research specialisation of IPR, it is regarded as a merit to be able to demonstrate the ability to build up a research team in which a leading function has been of central importance.
