Third-cycle subject:Chemical engineering
Electrolysis processes, with electricity comes from renewable sources, enables fossil-free production of hydrogen gas and of other chemicals. However, more complex reactions and feedstocks increase the risk unwanted side reactions and often require precious electrocatalysts. The goal of this project is to introduce thin polymer coatings, of by-products from biorefineries, on the electrodes for enhanced selectivity, increased life-time and smarter cell designs. Systematic studies will be made to investigate transport of different species through polymer films synthesized in different ways and this will generate important understanding about the interplay between the chemistry and structure of the polymer and the electrochemical properties of the electrode. A long-term goal with the project, financed by the Swedish Energy Agency, is a more efficient production of hydrogen and oxygen.
The PhD student will work in the division of applied electrochemistry, with about 30 PhD students and seniors doing research on batteries, fuel cells and electrolytic processes, see more here. Supervision: The doctoral student will be supervised by the professors Ann Cornell and Minna Hakkarainen.

Target degree: Doctoral degree
Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years ' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
