Third-cycle subject: Physics - specialization materials- and nanophysics
The position is placed at the Dept. of Applied Physics. The group’s research is primarily experimental and directed towards engineering nanomaterials for energy applications. A major research topic is thermoelectric (TE) materials, which are defined as solid-state and direct energy conversion materials capable of interconverting between heat and power. Recent trends revealed that if pre-made nanostructured TE materials can be assembled to 3D structures their transport properties can be controlled by the secondary phase filling the gaps within the structure. In the present project (with the funding from Swedish Research Agency (VR)) we will focus on developing low dimensional/nanostructured TE materials, their controlled assembly into higher order structures using electrophoretic/electrochemical or other film formation methods. These films with tunable porosity will be impregnated with solid or liquid electrolytes to influence the electronic transport where the resultant hybrid materials' characteristics as well as the nano building blocks will be evaluated in detail. Energy, time and resource effective solution-based fabrication processes will be developed with the aim of scaling up the developed materials technology. In addition TE devices will be fabricated by processing the fabricated materials and develop critical packaging and contacting technologies. The project requires a broad knowledge of different nanomaterial synthesis and electrochemical controlled assembly strategies as well as advanced characterization and device fabrication skills.

The most suitable background for this position would be Master of Science in Nanotechnology, Chemistry or Materials Science. hands on epxerience on electrochemical techniques is required where familiarity to electrophoretic deposition processes will be valued very high.
