Processes and Products for a circular BioEconomy (Pro2BE, https://www.kau.se/pro2be) is the research group at Karlstad University that focuses on the transformation of the present economic/technical culture, which is based on consumption of non-renewable resources, to a bioeconomy based on circularity of renewable resources. The forest industry is an important stakeholder in this transformation with which Pro2BE has a long history of joint research projects. The research focus of Pro2BE goes hand in hand with the priorities of Region Värmland as outlined in the regional Smart Specialization Agenda. Forest-based bioeconomy is established as a highly prioritized specialization in this agenda and is thus one of the selected areas in the ongoing cooperation between Region Värmland and Karlstad University, the Academy for Smart Specialization https://www.kau.se/en/external-relations/external-relations-university/good-examples/academy-smart-specialisation. A regional strength in regard to the transformation to a forest-based bioeconomy is the access to test beds where forest-based products, processes and services can be demonstrated and optimized. By creating strong links between the research group Pro2BE at Karlstad University and a number of regional test beds we aim at stimulating innovation, aligning Pro2BE with the activities in the region, and contributing to the implementation of the Smart Specialization Agenda.
The postdoctoral appointment will be connected to the research group Pro2BE at Karlstad University and will involve research on the production of fuel pellets. The research focus will be on increasing the knowledge of interfacial properties and bonding mechanisms for particles of wood from spruce and pine, including the influence of bio based adhesive additives. To be able to understand the pellet process, one need to be able to determine the chemical and physical properties of a good pellet, this includes morphological and interface region characterisation. Research will be done in cooperation with three test beds environments, the Drinor continuous dewatering press, the pilot pellet plant at Karlstad University and a 3D-printing test bed.
To be eligible for the position, applicants are required to hold a PhD in Environmental and Energy Systems, Materials Engineering or Chemical Engineering or another area relevant for the project or have the equivalent qualifications. The candidate must have completed the degree no more than three years before the last date for applications, unless special ground exists. The applicant must have a good command of English (written and oral).
Considerable weight is given to applicants’ academic merits and particularly to publications in international peer-reviewed scientific journals related to Pro2BE’s research areas. Weight is also given to knowledge and/or experience in the following project-relevant fields:
Experience of successful cooperation with industrial partners external to academia is an advantage.
Terms of Employment
The position is a full-time employment with a minimum of 80 % for research and a maximum of 20 % for other duties at the university e.g. teaching. The employment is limited to two years and the starting date is by mutual agreement within the time span September 1, 2017 and January 1, 2018.
