The Photonics Research Group (about 85 people) is associated with IMEC and is part of the Department of Information Technology of Ghent University. The group is headed by Prof. R. Baets and has been active in photonics device research for many years. The other professors in the group are P. Bienstman, W. Bogaerts, B. Kuyken, N. Le Thomas, G. Morthier, G. Roelkens and D. Van Thourhout. The main research directions are silicon nanophotonics, heterogeneous integration, optical communication, photonic (bio)sensors and photonic integrated circuits for biomedical applications in the near-infrared and mid-infrared wavelength range. Particularly, the silicon nanophotonics work focuses on the design and fabrication of SOI-based photonic devices using standard lithographic techniques compatible with CMOS-processing.

The Photonics Research Group has been coordinating the network of excellence ePIXnet and is involved in a number of EU-projects, including the H2020 projects Aquarius, MIRPHAB, CALADAN, MEDPHAB & INSPIRE. Furthermore, the group is partner of the Center for Nano- and Biophotonics of Ghent University and the group has been awarded four ERC Independent Researcher Starting Grants, one ERC Consolidator Grant and two ERC Advanced Investigator Grants.

YOUR TASKS

• At least 70% of your assignment will be spent on academic research.
• You will develop the micro-transfer printing of GaAs QD lasers and semiconductor optical amplifiers on full platform silicon photonic integrated circuits and SiN photonic integrated circuits. You will be in charge of the design of the narrow linewidth tunable laser structures, the design of the microwave photonic integrated circuit, the processing and integration of the GaAs QD laser/amplifier structures and the characterization of the lasers/amplifiers/photonic ICs.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

• You hold a thesis-based doctorate (obtained max. 6 years ago. This term of 6 years is determined by the date written on the above-mentioned required diploma in integrated optics. You have a strong track record in the design, fabrication and characterization of III-V semiconductor devices and their heterogeneous integration on silicon photonic integrated circuits.
• You possess strong verbal and written English communication skills allowing you to effectively communicate with industrial partners.

• We offer you a contract of indefinite duration with a maximum term of 3 years.
•  Your contract will start on 1/03/2021 at the earliest.
