Job description

The PhD research proposal concerns the enhancement of noisy speech acquired by a single microphone. Specifically, the topic is at the intersection of signal processing and machine learning. Within this PhD the goal is to develop novel methods for audio and speech enhancement, that combine the strengths of traditional, statistical-model based algorithms with the advantages offered by approaches based on machine learning and deep neural networks. The application areas of this research encompass the fields of telecommunications, hearing prostheses, and human-machine interfaces.

The work will be carried out at the Internet and Data Sciences Lab (IDLab), within the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture of Ghent University, Belgium. We offer candidates the possibility to carry out challenging, high-impact research within a relaxed, supportive, international and interdisciplinary setting.

Profile of the candidate

  • Applicants should hold an academic university degree (Masters or equivalent) in any of the following branches of engineering: Electrical/Computer, Acoustics, Signal Processing, Communications, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence.
  • Fluency in high-level languages (e.g., Python, Matlab) and digital signal processing knowledge are essential. Experience with real-time audio processing (in Python/C/C++) is desirable. Prior experience with audio/speech enhancement is a big plus.
  • Candidates are expected to have excellent written and oral English and (where applicable) should be open to learning Dutch.
  • Above all, the candidate should be highly self-motivated and eager to learn and contribute to the research done within the group.
