In an effort to discover the physical principles for genome search and deciphering the elusive regulatory genetic code we are creating a research environment to connect biology, engineering and physics. This interdisciplinary milieu will close the loop between technology development and fundamental research with many important implications throughout the life sciences.
The research labs involved are the Tenje and Andersson-Svahn groups, that work on microfluidic solutions for cell analysis, the Nilsson group that develops molecular diagnostics in situ, the Kamerlin group that performs computer simulations of protein-DNA interactions, and the Elf, Johansson and Deindl groups that investigate molecular interactions and kinetics using single molecule, systems biology and structural approaches.
The technological outcome of the project will make it possible to connect dynamic phenotypes to the underlying genotype for thousands of different cells simultaneously. This method will have possible applications in many areas of science including drug discovery, biotech product optimization and basic genetic research.
The present position is located in the lab of Lynn Kamerlin at the Department of Molecular Systems Biology, Starting date: 2017-06-01, or as otherwise agreed. The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (ICM) of Uppsala University is one of the most international, interdisciplinary and successful research departments in molecular biosciences in Europe including for example 5 ERC funded PIs, and an HFSP grantee.
Mission: We are looking for someone who wants to work in a curiosity-driven research environment with world-leading scientific projects. We offer a stimulating research environment at the interface between computational biology, biochemistry and microbiology where we characterize the basic mechanisms of bacterial gene regulation.
Duties/Project description: Together with the interdisciplinary team of researchers you will use and develop new methods for molecular dynamics simulations to be able to answer fundamental questions about molecular search kinetics and the regulatory genetic code. The project will focus on computational modeling of protein-DNA interactions, using a broad range of computational techniques, including molecular dynamics simulations, free energy calculations, and various enhanced sampling approaches. The aim will be to understand the molecular features that determine protein-DNA recognition, and how sequence changes in the DNA affect this. Requirements: You have a passion for science and high ambitions to perform top quality research. You hold a master degree in a relevant subject area; you have good experience in at least one of the computational techniques of relevance to the project, and, while not mandatory, programming experience is a plus. Personal qualities, ability to work independently and at the same time be able to interact with other researchers is very important. Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English are prerequisites.
