Description
The Visual Arts section at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Department of Artistic Studies, offers undergraduate level courses on the theory, practice and pedagogy of visual arts. There are two main foci, visual arts education in pre- and primary school education, and subject-specific courses on visual narrative, art and design, the philosophy of photography and techniques of visualization. All courses comprise both theory and design components. 

Research at Karlstad University is pursued in the fields of the visual arts, and related areas such as pedagogical work, media and communication studies, and cultural studies.

Duties
Duties involve participating actively in developing courses and teaching, contributing to the reciprocal development of research and education, and keeping up with developments in the subject and in any other aspect of relevance to teaching. Duties include teaching, pedagogical development efforts, supervision, examination, course convening and course development in teacher education and subject- specific courses.

A senior lecturer is also expected to initiate and pursue research, thus contributing to departmental and subject-related projects in cooperation with other researchers and external partners, nationally and internationally, as well as to engage in outreaching efforts. Courses are offered both on campus and as distance education. The successful candidate is expected to participate in the daily work at the department.

Qualification requirements
The eligibility requirements are a Bachelor level teaching degree in visual arts, and a doctor’s degree in Visual Arts Education or equivalent research qualifications in the field of visual arts. 

Teaching skills and completed course in higher education pedagogy are required. In special circumstances this course may be completed within two years of appointment as part of the professional development commitment. Assessment criteria
Special weight is given to the applicant’s experience of teaching visual arts in higher education. Considerable weight is given to teaching and supervising skills at undergraduate and Master’s levels and to experience of administrative duties in higher education. Weight is given to research in the subject, and to experience of artistic and pedagogic work. 

Personal qualities such as responsiveness, collaboration abilities and commitment are considered in the ranking of candidates. Considerable weight is given to good command of Swedish and English in speech and writing.

Terms of employment
This is a full-time (100%) non-fixed term employment. A trial period of 6 months may be required. Starting date: At the earliest convenience.

  • Account of other experience, and experience of leadership, cooperation and administration

  • Copies of certificates, references and degrees
  • Relevant works submitted for consideration: at the most ten academic publications and a maximum of five works designed to convey knowledge such as textbooks, educational software or popular science articles (describe your own role in cases of co-authorship)
